You see, lizards were a very special kind of purposed organism, to the point that it’s debatable to even classify them as such.

and interactions with other creatures were far less systematic than they eventually became.

Well, "carefree" might be a strong word here. Some of the lizards in this catalogue seem completely unfit for basic functioning.
Like this one, which has a shrunken head, no teeth, and frills longer than its entire body! These breeds would have vanished as soon as the ancients did.
